 Thanks everyone for your responses,

 I did reinstall Xcode.  I have figured it out through experience.  It
 seems that for every error encountered, it is most important to read the
 log at
 /opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports
 .org_release_ports_x11_xorg-libXext/main.log and deal with each package
 individually when fetching them.  It seems as though mac ports times out
 when trying to get dependencies from certain locations.  Only when I
 fetched them individually, did this solve the problem.  I now have
 successfully installed googlecl.
