 $ port update outdated

 This failed in gdal with an errors in hdf4imagedataset.cpp.  I was able in
 install without hdf4.  Then I tried:

 $ port install gdal +hdf4
 --->  Computing dependencies for gdal
 --->  Fetching gdal
 --->  Verifying checksum(s) for gdal
 --->  Extracting gdal
 --->  Applying patches to gdal
 --->  Configuring gdal
 --->  Building gdal
 Error: Target org.macports.build returned: shell command failed (see log
 for details)
 Log for gdal is at:
 /opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_ports_gis_gdal/main.log

 The log has the following errors:

 this scope

 this scope

 $ port installed hdf4 gdal
 The following ports are currently installed:
   gdal @1.7.3_1+hdf5+netcdf+python26 (active)
   hdf4 @4.2.5_1 (active)
