 rather, i think it's because tomcat5 is being built with JDK6. Apple
 stopped shipping JDK5 starting with snow leopard.

 i followed the instructions at this website
 (http://wiki.oneswarm.org/index.php/OS_X_10.6_Snow_Leopard) to install
 JDK5 on Snow Leopard. it's a bit hacky.

 i reinstalled all of java packages. (had to delete the below lines from
 commons-dbcp Portfile), and tomcat 5 built and installed fine for me.
