 Just to let you know, I was able to build universals.

 I set the following flags in macports.conf:
 build_arch i386, universal_archs ppc i386, macosx_deployment_target 10.4

 Then I commented out the following line in
 opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/ports/aqua/fltk/Portfile:
 universal_variant no

 Just thought it may be useful to let you know...
