 A bit more info.

 Just to try to see what is going on, I removed the two .a files
 (/opt/local/lib/libltdl.a and /opt/local/lib/libltdl.la).

 Then I ran your proposed "sudo port -n upgrade --force libtool".

 This re-installed the two .a files, but did not bring in the corresponding
 libltdl.dylib.
