 Thanks for steering me in the right direction. Finally able to start the
 built-in apache2 successfully on OS 10.5 with the following architecture
 option added to /usr/sbin/apachectl

 {{{
 # the path to your httpd binary, including options if necessary
 HTTPD="arch -ppc /usr/sbin/httpd"
 }}}

 I now have smokeping running successfully over 10.5/PPC and 10.6/Intel
 while employing SpeedyCGI. Interestingly, I note that mention has been
 made on the smokeping maillist this week of what it might involve to
 migrate from SpeedyCGI to FastCGI.
