 I've successfully compiled encfs 1.7.4 usinsg fuse4x 0.86 on SL and it
 works like a charm.

 I've already added the function back. You can find it in the "pu" branch
 of fuse subproject. The change should be merged to master soon. I still
 think that restoring the compatibility is a good thing as other project
 might depend on it.
