 I followed the directions given in the above mentioned post and was able
 to successfully build using the clang compiler. I added the following
 lines to the openmpi port file
 (/opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/ports/science/openmpi/Portfile).

 if {${configure.compiler} == "llvm-gcc-4.2"} {
     configure.compiler clang
 }
