 When an image thumbnail is double clicked to enter view mode, the image
 edit tools in the EDIT button of the toolbar (the palette icon at the top
 right) are greyed out.

 A similar set (of less comprehensive tools) in the TOOLS button on the
 toolbar are NOT greyed out but have lesser functionality.

 In the screenshot you can see the greyed tools along the vertical bar at
 right hand side of the screen.

 I have checked I have full read/write access to the files. I note the
 libraries used by gthumb in macports are not the same as in gnome and some
 are image related e.g. libjpeg.
