Comment:

 gcc45 should only be the default variant if the user has not already
 chosen the gcc44 variant.

 Is there really a reason why a user would want to disable cfitsio or
 pgplot support? Fewer variants is better, so perhaps the no_cfitsio and
 no_pgplot variants can be omitted.
