 After receiving the libgdiplus errors, I was able to successfully install
 mono by installing the universal versions of cyrus-sasl2 and libxslt:

 # port clean libgdiplus
 # port clean cyrus-sasl2
 # port install cyrus-sasl2 +universal
 # port clean libxslt
 # port install libxslt +universal
 # port install mono
 }}}
