 I too hit this problem and was able to workaround it by using this
 variant:[[BR]]

 sudo port install python27 +universal

 As there are a bunch of dependencies which need to be updated to
 +universal, this took a while however it worked for me! ;-)[[BR]]

 My machine is a Mac Book Pro running OSX 10.6.7[[BR]]
