if that works, we want to use that, not apple-gcc-4.2.

Yes, I am sure about that. Perhaps I should have been more specific: ''In
MacPorts'', the default compiler on Xcode 4.2 is clang, and on Xcode 4.0
and 4.1 it is llvm-gcc-4.2. If you would like to discuss this decision,
please do so on macports-dev, not here.
