 Thanks for referring me to the developers of pango. I actually found a
 response to my question in a website related to them:

 To summarize the discussion there:

 This problem is well-known problem with pango's ATSUI backend in Mac OS X.
 Pango's developers are developing CoreText backend, that will be replacing
 the ATSUI backend for Macs running Mac OS 10.5 and later.
