 The Scala I'm familiar with is a language that runs on the JVM, so it's
 odd that there are instructions telling you to install fontconfig and
 gtk2, which are not needed at all.

 Can you provide a link to the instructions you mentioned?  Perhaps its a
 different scala?

 Also, there's no , at the end of the command:

 {{{
 sudo port upgrade --enforce-variants gtk2 +universal,
 }}}

 if that wasn't intentional?
