 Thank you for UsingTheRightCompiler but the part that actually fixed the
 problem was adding ${configure.cflags}, specifically ${configure.optflags}
 i.e. `-O2`, to the CFLAGS; looks like `-O1`, `-O2`, and `-O3` work but the
 default `-O0` does not.
