New description:

 I keep attempting to install a port that is local and it gives me the
 error of:
 {{{
 Error: /opt/local/bin/port: Failed to initialize MacPorts, Port extract
 failed: tar: Error opening archive: Failed to open
 '/Users/jonathan/Users/jonathan/ports'
 }}}

 It seemed to duplicate the Users/jonathan part of the code and i haven't
 been able to figure out why. i think that might be the problem because i
 have talked to people who were able to get the same port running. Some
 help would be appreciated.

 Exactly what command did you type, in what directory? Can you show us the
 Portfile you're using?
