 Thanks for those links.

 I've found that in Xcode 4.2.1 the gcc-4.2 compiler is no longer
 installed. Instead only llvm-gcc-4.2 and clang are installed.
 I've tried with both of these compilers and they both fail.
 See attached logs for clang and llvm-gcc-4.2 compilers
