New description:

 buiding on ox10.5 dual g5 macpro

 checking if gcj supports -fno-rtti -fno-exceptions... (cached) no
 checking for gcj option to produce PIC... -fno-common
 }}}

 hung on this for over a day. switching to gcc42 fixed the problem, as gcj
 was not detected.

Comment:

 Sounds like just as I already told libtool to not look for gfortran in
 r86790, we need to tell libtool not to look for gcj either.
