New description:

 I can reproducibly crash the GIMP by doing the following:

  - Start GIMP (it does not matter whether it's started from a bash or from
 the MacOS GUI)
  - Open some image
  - Select the "curves" tool
  - wait about a second

 On stderr, I see the following:

 {{{
 [me at mymachine ~]$ gimp &
 [1] 14985
 [me at mymachine ~]$
 (gimp:14985): GLib-WARNING **: goption.c:2132: ignoring no-arg, optional-
 arg or filename flags (8) on option of type 0
 Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-HvcW4M/org.x:0".
 Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-
 HvcW4M/org.x:0.0".
 Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-
 HvcW4M/org.x:0.0".
 gimp: Fatal IO error 35 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server
 /tmp/launch-HvcW4M/org.x:0.

 (script-fu:15166): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: script-fu: gimp_wire_read():
 error

 [1]+  Exit 1                  gimp
 }}}

 Since this error does not occur with any other Xorg-based program, and
 does not occur on a Linux box using the same software versions, I assume
 that something's wrong with the port. I'll gladly provide more information
 if you tell me what to look for.
