 Indeed, this worked for me (brand new mac mini with Lion & Xcode 4.2):
 {{{
 sudo port -fp uninstall --follow-dependents installed # uninstall
 everything to make sure
 sudo port install apple-gcc42
 sudo port install gcc44 configure.compiler=apple-gcc-4.2
 }}}
