 I commented in #31261 on how we could fix this.

 The problem is not specifically the MacPorts version of `file`; any other
 non-Apple version of the `file` command would have the same problem. The
 problem is the root developers assume the `file` command is the Apple
 version, and in some environments it won't necessarily be. It is unwise of
 them to rely on Apple's extensions to the `file` command in their script.
