Comment(by michaelallenwarner@…):

My machine *is* too old to run the 64-bit kernel. On paper everything is
fine: I have a Core 2 Duo processor, and when I check my EFI in Terminal
 with "ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi", it returns EFI64 (not
EFI32). Nonetheless, my model is incapable of running the 64-bit kernel
(again, 64-bit apps run just fine in the 32-bit environment). As I
understand it, it's an artificial limitation that Apple placed on the
MacBook 4,1. It's quite stupid that my 2008 model has this artificial
limitation, while the iMac 7,1 from 2007 apparently boots to the 64-bit
kernel by default in Lion. That's the way it is.

Is it possible that the "host_cpu" in the gavl config file needs to match
the kernel's architecture? If not, I'm at a loss as to why my "fix"
 worked.
