Comment(by macports@…):

FWIW, I also have what appears to be identical symptoms on Snow Leopard:

X11.app crashes out, with just opening a new blank image in gimp2 then
opening the Curves dialogue. No further user interaction is required.

I made an attempt today to recompile everything that gimp2 depends on, in
the hope that might help (eg, that some underlying library had changed in
an incompatible manner since gimp2 or similar had been compiled). But
unfortunate netpbm cannot currently be built from source (relies on doing
a SVN checkout during "fetch", and the SVN server is failing due to being
unable to create a temporary directory), which meant that "port upgrade
--force gimp2" failed 138 ports into 198 :-( Even after activating an
older netpbm port, and doing "port -n upgrade --force gimp2" to rebuild
gimp2 itself with those 138 rebuilt libraries, it still crashes as above.

I've let it "Report to Apple" a few times over the last couple of weeks
but mostly not bothered (since I assumed they went into the sort of
blackhole describe by the previous comment). (I've no radar number
either, since AFAIK this is an Apple Internal thing, and I don't know
anyone inside Apple who could create one.)
