 It looks a problem of gc.

 I tried to run w3m with the latest boehmgc-devel on Lion and it works!

 % port installed w3m
 The following ports are currently installed:
   w3m @0.5.3_0 (active)
 % sudo port -f deactivate boehmgc
 % sudo port install boehmgc-devel
 % w3m http://www.nytimes.com
 }}}

 I attached a patch to port:w3m that allows both of boehmgc and bohemgc-
 devel.
