 To the best that I can tell, mysql55-server doesn't read a my.cnf file at
 /opt/local/etc/mysql55

 Defining a pid file in my.cnf doesn't work - it creates its own pid file.

 It doesn't create a socket file despite being defined in the my.cnf file
 which causes other problems like PHP not being able to connect to the
 database.
