 FWIW, I tried out par with the new Portfile and it worked fine.  So in
 terms of functionality I think it's ready to go.

 Nothing against Adam Costello, the original author of par, but the last
 time it was updated was April 29th ... of 2001, 11 years ago.  Holy balls,
 suddenly I feel old.
