Comment:

 The problem is that `openmpi` doesn't just pull in a library, it installs
 `openmpi` as well, which is rather large.

 I'd turn the question around and say "why not just add the variant to your
 `${prefix}/etc/macports/variants.conf` file?

 I understand why you're asking, but then you need to ask "why not add
 python as a default variant"... and it keeps getting bigger...
