The sed error seems to have come from changes Apple made to their sed; the
fix that I've seen in a few places (and which worked for me building from
Octave's development sources) was to first unset the LANG variable before
building. (Homebrew has run into the same problem, see here:
https://github.com/mxcl/homebrew/pull/13787)
