 I ran into this problem trying to install gimp2.  I removed the check in
 the gtk2 portfile as suggested and was able to successfully build and run
 gimp2.  Gimp runs without starting X11, although {{{otool -L libgtk-
 quartz-2.0.dylib}}}  shows that it references several x11 libraries.

 So far I haven't built anything else that uses gtk2, but at least Gimp
 works OK.
