 giflib 5.0.0 was released in June 2012. Here's a patch to update the port.
 But it will not be committed.

 giflib 5 has a different API than giflib 4. I haven't yet found a single
 port in MacPorts that uses giflib that is compatible with giflib 5. I
 began to file bug reports with the various projects. Here's the result:

  * [https://trac.enlightenment.org/e/ticket/1072 evas]: the developers
 will not support giflib 5
  * [https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=303520 kdelibs4]: no response to
 bug report
  * [http://code.google.com/p/leptonica/issues/detail?id=63 leptonica]: the
 developers suggest we use giflib 4 for the foreseeable future
  * [https://bugzilla.xamarin.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5859 libgdiplus]: no
 response to bug report

 So MacPorts will stay on giflib 4 until further notice.
