 I ran into this same issue with the php53 port.

 It seems it's being caused by the +debug variant. Without that variant,
 everything compiles fine and there's a php53 executable in /opt/local/bin.
 With that variant, however, there's only php53.dSYM in /opt/local/bin. I
 reinstalled the port a couple of times to make sure it was in fact the
 +debug variant causing this.
