New description:
In order to install bzip2 under Lion I had to do a complete deletion of
any existing macports distro. Then after a fresh install and self update,
load ONLY bzip2 to ensure that the right keys and files were loaded.
bzip2 will not download from any site. I obtained the copy from
www.bzip.org and placed it in the directory
/opt/local/var/macports/distfiles/bzip2. Then I ran sudo port install
bzip2. It finally installed after that.
I'm not properly relaying my acrimony toward bzip2. Many times, it has
caused me pain in loading macports on new machines. There is something
seriously wrong with bzip2's macport install.

Comment:
In the future, please don't forget to use [wiki:WikiFormatting] and cc'ing
the maintainer. And don't use arbitrary keywords (see
[wiki:DraftKeywordGuidelines]) and leave the priority untouched.
Otherwise it seems you've got problem with your network connection:
{{{
DEBUG: Fetching distfile failed:: connect() timed out!
}}}
What is the output from:
{{{
$ curl -v -X HEAD http://distfiles.macports.org
}}}
