Comment:

 In the future please provide unified diffs, not entire new portfiles or
 archives of portfiles. This makes it easier to review your proposal.

 I see in the Portfile you added this block:

 {{{
     universal {
         build.target-append macosx-universal
     }
 }}}

 This is inside a switch for ${configure.build_arch}; configure.build_arch
 will never be "universal" so this block will never get executed. So I'll
 not add that block. Adding a universal variant to john would be great, but
 this is not how to do it.
