 I will try this out tomorrow night. Sorry if I didn't triage this to your
 satisfaction, but I don't have much free time to put in to chasing down
 crashes in new versions of compilers.

 I don't believe the compiler version checking was in place yet when I made
 these changes, but hopefully with your fixes we can remove most of the
 checks.
