 A selfupdate + upgrade outdated pulled down a new git-core.  The
 installation failed, and at the end of it I discovered /dev/null was
 missing.  This causes many problems with any shell-based applications.

 Rebooting brought back /dev/null, but attempting the upgrade outdated
 again resulted in /dev/null going away again.
