 Note the mailing list people recommended uninstalling Xcode and
 reinstalling, but I am unwilling to do that.  I will just use a .dmg
 provided for the same software by Oracle.

 If you are unwilling to uninstall and reinstall Xcode to test whether the
 problem is with your Xcode, then we will need somebody else who has Lion
 10.7.3 and Xcode 4.2.1 to test whether they can install virtualbox or not.
