 I'm now faced with a choice: either I patch the config/make scripts to
 make use of the environment variables (like $CC) that MacPorts passes (and
 I have no idea how much effort it would take), or abandon the work I
 started. I have forwarded this information to the reduce developers and
 await a response. In the emantime, if someone with more experience than
 myself would like to get involved, I would gladly welcome the help.
