 What are your OS and XCode versions?  I don't have /usr/libexec/gcc/i686
 -apple-darwin11/4.2.1 on my Lion machines (XCode 4.2.x), and I don't have
 it on my one SL machine (XCode 3.2.x)

 So my guess is that it's old crud sitting around.  Can you tell me what
 these report:

 /usr/bin/ld -v
 }}}
