 # port clean -f <specified-port> && port install <specified-port>
 +universal
 got me through this.
 The problem is that moments before I specified:
 # port mpkg mysql5 +universal
 which requires most of the same dependencies anyway; that worked and
 metapackaged the result just fine. mysql5-server did not.
