 I just tried to install texlive-latex-recommended on a fresh macports
 system and the installation aborted with a complaint that 'xz' could not
 be found.

 Upon installing xz and afterwards retrying to install the texlive-latex-
 recommended package, the installation went fine then.

 Should xz be added to the dependencies?
