Comment:

 Fetching GPL'd code from a VCS is problematic now that we are distributing
 binaries. If the repo ever goes away, we would then be distributing
 binaries without being able to supply the source when asked, in violation
 of the GPL. So in such a case we really need to fetch a tarball which we
 can then mirror.
