#35341: xcode not found - user directory is not on main drive

I have my user directory on a different drive than the OS (10.7). xcode
installs without any problems and I can start it.
I downloaded the 10.7 installer and it seems to run OK.
When I run
sudo port -v selfupdate
it runs OK.
When I run
sudo port upgrade outdated
every package gets this message:
Warning: Xcode does not appear to be installed; most ports will likely
fail to build.
xcode is in Macintosh HD/Applications
and my user directory is in mce/mjc
What do I need to adjust to have ports know where xcode is, and is there
anything else I need to do?
Thanks
