 I am having the same problem, but I don't even see a ports folder in the
 path you specified.  I tried running selfupdate, and all went well;
 however, there is still no ports directory.
 sudo portindex -f
 Creating port index in
 /opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release

 Total number of ports parsed:   0
 Ports successfully parsed:      0
 Ports failed:                   0
 Up-to-date ports skipped:       0
