New description:

 uname gives:
 {{{
 Darwin Kernel Version 11.4.0: Mon Apr  9 19:32:15 PDT 2012;
 root:xnu-1699.26.8~1/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64
 }}}

 I did a {{{port -s install geda-gaf}}} which appeared to run fine. When I
 issue gschem on the command line I get the following error:

 {{{
 dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libffi.5.dylib
   Referenced from: /usr/local/bin/gschem
   Reason: image not found
 Trace/BPT trap: 5
 }}}

 Which is indeed true. I only have /opt/local/lib/libffi6.dylib. Since I
 did a -s I thought that this would force the source to recompile on my
 platform such that issues like this would not happen. What am I doing
 wrong? [[br]]
