Comment:

 Committed in r94486 with some changes:
  * Fixed to use correct CFLAGS, LDFLAGS and CC
  * Made default status of sse3 variant conditional on whether sse3 is
 available
  * Added check that mpi variant is not set before making pthreads default
  * Corrected license version range
  * Cleaned up whitespace
