 Thanks!  Yes, I'm using the org-mode that comes in emacs.
 I downloaded the texlive-latex-extra port and tried to export to pdf again
 -  still same result.  I get a .tex file but no pdf.

 The emacs configure menus around latex and pdf look messed up to me.  I
 believe the problem is in the emacs port.
