 Let me reiterate why this is a defect, not an enhancment:
 Running {{{port fetch}}}, a specific set of variants is selected for the
 build.

 {{{
 $ port help fetch
 Usage: fetch

 Downloaded distfiles for the given ports

 }}}

 "help" states nothing about also selecting the default variants for the
 fetched port.

 Please mark as defect.
