 Ok, that provides the clue:

 ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libbz2.dylib, file was built for
 unsupported file format which is not the architecture being linked (i386)
 }}}

 So, although MacPorts thinks, as shown in your "`port -v installed bzip2`"
 output [comment:4 above], that it installed bzip2 universal for i386
 x86_64, it doesn't actually contain the i386 part. So rebuild bzip2.

 sudo port -n upgrade --force bzip2
 }}}
