Comment(by macports@…):

For the benefit of anyone playing at home, xorg-server (and xorg-server-
devel) in MacPorts are now both on 1.12.0, which is an xorg-server release
that includes the relevant patch (I've tested by using the "curves"
function in Gimp on OS X 10.6.8 -- Snow Leopard, against xorg-server
1.12.0). So it should no longer be necessary to track xorg-server-devel
changes to have this bug fixed. (But AFAIK the fix hasn't been released
by Apple into their X server, so the Macports X server is still required
 if you're affected.)

To swap from xorg-server-devel to xorg-server, I just quit the X11 server,
 then did:

     sudo port deactivate xorg-server-devel
     sudo port install xorg-server

and on starting the next X application the 1.12 xorg-server was auto-
launched (per my blog post linked earlier in this ticket; at some point
I'll uninstall the deactivated port: I've actually got lots of deactivated
ports that need to be uninstalled to free up space, which I tend to do in
 a periodic mass tidy up.)
